OK Kitten, formerly known as Skuzzy Dirty, stands as a pioneering force in the realm of experimental noise artistry, continuously pushing musical boundaries for nearly two decades. Fueled by a relentless passion for crafting raw and unapologetic soundscapes, OK Kitten challenges conventional notions of melody and harmony with fearless creativity.
Here we will ask them 10 question to learn a bit more about them.
1. How do you stay motivated and creatively inspired after nearly two decades in such a demanding and niche genre?
Motivation comes and goes, I honestly just enjoy creating.
2. What techniques do you use to ensure that each new project brings something fresh to your body of work?
I just try to add new sounds and rhythms. I started with drum and bass and it has morphed into the unknown.
3. Could you discuss a piece that you feel epitomizes your artistic evolution from Skuzzy Dirty to OK Kitten?
I think the major difference is I’m a bit more free now. A lot of people connect Skuzzy Dirty with my t-shirt line. Separating the two has been freeing.
4. How do you measure success for your music, especially in a genre that doesn’t conform to mainstream metrics?
I really don’t think there is such thing as success in experimental music. I just create and one day to find an audience.
5. What is the most challenging aspect of constantly pushing the boundaries of sound and musical form?
The only real challenge is not being too repetitive.
6. How do you think your approach to making music has changed with the technological advances in sound production?
It’s definitely gotten easier. DAW’s have improved greatly in the last 20 yrs.
7. In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception people have about the experimental noise genre?
That it’s just noise.
8. What role does the conceptual or thematic content play in your compositions, if any?
None really.
9. How do you balance the need for technical skill with the drive for pure creative expression in your work?
My creative desires well surpass my skills. I’m still learning as I go.
10. Looking ahead, what are the long-term goals for your career, and how do you plan to achieve them?
No real goals but hoping I never lose the desire to create.
